Honda Motor wants to expand the production of electric cars
Japanese automaker Honda Motor plans to expand the production of electric cars. It intends to invest $40 billion in the production of 30 new models and expand its line of vehicles.
Honda plans to produce about 2 million electric cars annually. This strategy will allow the concern to achieve its goals of reducing the production of cars with internal combustion engines. By 2040 the company should completely switch to the production of electric cars.
It should be noted that the Japanese manufacturer is the first in the country, which intends to completely abandon the production of cars with gasoline and diesel engines. Despite rather ambitious plans, for now, the automobile concern has presented only one model on electric traction – Honda e.
By 2030, the company intends to equip new car models with solid-state batteries, which are already under development. While Honda will not produce its own batteries, it will buy them from General Motors and Envision AESC. Electric cars will be equipped with lithium-ion batteries for the time being.
In addition to the $40 billion investment, Honda plans to invest more than $64 billion in the further development of electric vehicles. The program is designed for 10 years.
To develop the direction, Honda Motor has joined forces with the American manufacturer General Motors to develop a new model range. It is assumed that the concerns will present an environmentally friendly transport that will be available to a large number of consumers. According to the representatives of the manufacturers, the cost of electric cars will not exceed 30 thousand dollars.
GM and Honda will cooperate in various directions, including the design, and exchange of innovative and production solutions. The corporations are focused on the market of South and North America, as well as buyers from China. Mass production will begin in 2027, it will include the production of about one million cars of popular models, including electric crossovers.
The environmental strategy includes increasing the demand for electric vehicles. However, one of the main problems that hinder the spread of battery-powered vehicles is their high cost. Therefore, companies are actively working to make the production of this type of transport cheaper. GM and Honda hope that through joint efforts the automobile companies will be able to find a solution to reduce the cost of electric cars. For now, the main focus of the manufacturers is to improve batteries. Since 2017, Honda has been working on reducing the charging time of electric cars without losing their capacity. The company has achieved some success in this direction, but the problem has not yet been completely solved.
It should be noted that Honda has long invested in the development of hybrid models, but in recent years has decided to switch to electric cars.
