Facebook strengthens measures for user security
One of the priorities of the American corporation Facebook is to increase the level of security for users. According to the official statement of the Internet giant, since 2016 about 13 billion dollars have been invested in this area. Now more than 40 thousand specialists are working on security, while five years ago this figure was 10 thousand people.
Such information was given by Mark Zuckerberg after the Wall Street Journal published documents indicating the concealment of information by Facebook. The publication states that the corporation in its official sources downplayed the negative impact of the Instagram social network on young users. In addition, the company’s management chose not to respond to employee allegations that the app was being used for illegal activities in developing countries. The team’s concern was triggered by examples of human trafficking that took place through Instagram.
Consequently, Facebook decided to adopt a new strategy to improve user safety. Now issues related to security will be closely monitored, and measures for this are planned to be implemented at the early stage of product development. Among the tools to improve the protection of services, the Internet giant uses the technology of artificial intelligence. Thanks to it, more than 3 billion fake accounts have been blocked this year. In addition, 20 million posts containing fake data regarding COVID-19 and vaccination were deleted.
According to the company, the introduced standards and mechanisms allow for much better filtering of information that is published on Facebook and Instagram. Now, if such content does not comply with the rules of social networks, experts remove it. The response to such posts and their blocking is 15 times faster than it was in 2017 when the mechanisms for regulating information were first introduced.
Not so long ago, Facebook rebranded itself to Meta and changed its name and logo. Management explained its decision by saying that the new name better reflects the company’s ambitions, which are not limited to social networks. Meta symbolizes the multiverse that Mark Zuckerberg and his team want to create. He stated that right now the company is perceived only as a social network, but in the future, its main focus will be technology that helps connect people. This goal is the next step of business development. To achieve it, the corporation is increasing investments in such units as Portal, Reality Labs, and Oculus. The latter, which represents virtual reality accessories, is one of the priority goals. In addition, the corporation strengthens development in the hardware segment.
