Improved cloud infrastructure in Singapore will boost AWS services
Amazon’s cloud infrastructure in Singapore will get an upgrade thanks to a significant investment. The company’s AWS division will invest around US$8.9 billion to expand its services in the country. The funding will be made available in instalments over four years.
Amazon’s interest in the region
AWS Singapore spokeswoman Priscilla Chong said the investment would be for constructing new data centres. The aim is to expand opportunities for customers in the Asia-Pacific region.
Amazon’s cloud computing division has operated in Singapore since 2010. The country was the company’s first in the Asia-Pacific region. According to Amazon’s official data, the company has invested approximately S$11 billion in the country during this period. The investments went to creating and developing the state’s cloud ecosystem. The company plans to invest S$23 billion in local infrastructure by 2028.
Meanwhile, AWS continues to increase the number of data centres and improve their functionality. The tech giant sees Singapore’s potential for business. There is a high demand for cloud services here, driven by the active pace of digitalisation.
AWS is paying particular attention to the education sector. Since 2017, the company has been offering training to improve digital skills. Over 400 thousand people went through the Amazon program during the specified period. They received the appropriate qualifications and experience in working with cloud computing.
The country’s potential
In Chong’s view, the decision to do business in Singapore is a result of several factors:
- a surge in demand for cloud services;
- demand for data centre services;
- increased interest in artificial intelligence technologies.
Like the rest of the world, Singapore has an active AI modelling and training sector. However, this requires processing huge amounts of data, which the cloud can provide. As such, AWS services are more relevant and in demand than ever before.
The Singapore government has responded positively to Amazon’s investment. Profile Minister Tan Kiat Hau highlighted the importance of the cloud service provider in developing the local digital economy. The authorities also signed a cooperation agreement with Amazon. This includes implementing measures to develop the country’s innovation sector. AWS capacity will be the basis for the introduction of new technologies. In this way, Singapore hopes to boost its technology industry and attract skilled workers from other countries.
It is worth noting that the country’s potential as a platform for innovation is attracting attention from other IT giants. Earlier, Apple Corporation announced a US$250 million investment in Singapore. Technology companies consider the country one of the leading ones in Southeast Asia.
