Unicorn startup Rubrik received a large investment from Microsoft Corporation
Microsoft has invested in Rubrik, a startup that manages and protects cloud data. According to the Internet giant, the move will improve user protection and provide users with more products for secure activities. In addition, cloud solutions are gaining in relevance, and carry enormous opportunities for digital activities in various areas of the market.
Rubrik was founded in 2014 in California, and became a unicorn in 2019. The startup develops technology for backup and provides data recovery services. Rubrik products facilitate the use of cloud solutions and provide a convenient platform for remote management. In addition, the company is engaged in improving security while working in the cloud. At the moment the startup has a leading position in this area, which influenced the decision to invest from the U.S. corporation.
The main areas of cooperation between Rubrik and Microsoft are the issue of data protection, data recovery and prevention of attacks by ransomware. In addition, the companies plan to work on automating processes and accelerating the transfer of data into the cloud. Microsoft notes that the startup’s experience will help improve the technology corporation and provide users with better services.
The parties have not disclosed the volume of investment, but a number of sources estimate the figure at $4 billion. Thanks to the partnership, the total customer base of the two companies amounted to more than 2 thousand and hundreds of petabytes of data.
The main principle of Rubrik is the NIST Zero Trust approach. It assumes that you cannot trust anyone – any gadget or application. This is based on the statement that data must remain unchanged, i.e. not subject to encryption or any other modification. Then ransomware won’t be able to modify and delete them. To recover information after an attack, Rubrik offers Zero Trust Data Management technology, which is of major interest to Microsoft.
The startup’s general manager Bipul Sinha said that thanks to cooperation with the Internet giant, Rubrik will be able to speed up and simplify the process of moving customers to the cloud, and provide them with the most convenient way to work. In addition, all users of Microsoft products will receive improved technology that will ensure their safety from malicious programs. Data will be protected from accidental or intentional deletion or corruption, and this applies to the entire Microsoft 365 package.
The companies also plan to improve the integration of popular enterprise applications such as SAP, Oracle and SQL into the Azure product. According to Microsoft representatives, this approach will improve digital transformation processes and increase productivity and optimize operations.
