Features and benefits of Wi-Fi 7
The Wi-Fi Alliance has announced the availability of a new wireless Internet standard, Wi-Fi 7. This standard offers users higher connection speeds and other benefits than previous generations.
It is worth noting that news about Wi-Fi 7 has been coming from representatives of the sphere for a long time. However, the official presentation took place in January 2024 at the CES exhibition. According to the statement, the new generation of Wi-Fi has a high bandwidth. It can transmit large amounts of data to several devices simultaneously.
Update overview
One of the main benefits of Wi-Fi 7 is the increase in throughput:
- 40 Gbps and 46 Gbps;
- compared to 9.6 Gbps in Wi-Fi 6, which is more than three times lower.
The new format also offers a high channel bandwidth – 320 MHz. The previous standard was 160MHz. The 7th generation thus guarantees high-quality data transmission with high bandwidth.
As for multi-channel MLO operation, the new feature allows devices to transmit and receive data simultaneously on multiple frequencies. This feature reduces the latency between devices and significantly increases transmission reliability. MLO makes it possible to increase the amount of data processed during its transmission between devices and the router. It is this feature that experts are most interested in.
For Wi-Fi 7, the 4K QAM modulation is available; previously, 1024 QAM was used. Thanks to this improvement, each signal can carry more data. It also increases the overall speed of the network connection.
Other features of Wi-Fi 7 include:
- 512 compressed lock;
- triggered uplink access.
These features help increase throughput while reducing latency.
Advantages over previous generations
The developers claim that Wi-Fi 7 will be 4 times faster than the previous version 6. However, it is essential to note that the claimed speed of 40Gbps will only be available in ideal conditions. For average home use, the figure is lower but still higher than Wi-Fi 6.
The new version also features a 6 GHz band, allowing for more home network bandwidth. This avoids a common problem with the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands – network congestion.
It also uses improved 4K QAM modulation to increase speeds by 20%.
Despite the many benefits of Wi-Fi 7, widespread adoption will take some time. The fact is that only a small number of devices are currently capable of supporting this generation.
