India begins testing cloud gaming using 5G connectivity
The mobile gaming market is rapidly developing, and many international corporations are actively investing in this area. The spread of the new 5G communications standard was another impetus for an increase in the level of services provided. Against this backdrop, a number of companies are planning to test cloud games. Producers of telecommunications equipment Ericsson and Nokia have joined forces with one of the largest mobile operators Bharti Airtel in order to test the convenience and functionality of games through the power of 5G. Testing is already underway in India and is showing excellent results.
According to Airtel, mobile gaming is a highly sought-after market that is already generating billions of dollars and will remain profitable for a long time to come. The telecom company estimated the mobile gaming market for India at $2.4 billion. It is predicted that by the end of the year, the number of gamers in the country will grow to 510 million users, at the moment this figure is 436 million people. This segment is an opportunity not only for developers and mobile operators, but also providers of equipment and communication services 5G. For the convenience of users it is important that the product has not only quality graphics and an interesting storyline, but also corresponds to the technical characteristics. The 5G communication standard will help with the latter, which provides high speed signal transmission. Thanks to this, the process of the game goes without delays and slowdowns, which provides comfort during the game.
The companies are now testing 5G on a broad spectrum band that has high bandwidth within 3,500 MHz. The tests are taking place in the large industrial center of India, the city of Manesar. In addition to Ericsson and Nokia, Airtel has also attracted popular Indian gamers Mortal and Mamba. Blacknut, a cloud-based gaming platform, was chosen for testing, which includes various competitions, including races, requiring fast reactions and data transfer with minimal latency. The network from Airtel provides download speeds of 1 Gbit / s with a delay of no more than 10 ms.
Tests of the new networks are not just in Manesar, Airtel has created the necessary infrastructure to support 5G in other Indian cities as well. So far the testing is a trial spectrum, but if this project is successful, in the future the company plans to expand the technical capabilities for networks of the new standard.
Cloud gaming is becoming interesting not only for core companies, but also for well-known Internet giants. For example, last year, Facebook entered this market by launching its own service for mobile gaming. Now users of the social network will be able to find the “Games” tab directly in their newsfeed and spend time doing their favorite activity.
