Meta augmented reality glasses: key features
After rumours and leaks, Meta Corporation has finally unveiled its new product, the Orion augmented reality glasses. Unlike existing models, they look less bulky. Meta assures that the accessory will be a comfortable and functional device for an immersive experience.
The company first discussed developing AR glasses about five years ago. However, the project has been around for about ten years. It is worth noting that Meta is not a pioneer in the development of such devices. Giants like Microsoft and Google have already released their versions of the glasses, but they have not gained widespread popularity.
The gadget’s advantages
The authors of the prototype claim that Orion is the perfect model for an augmented reality device. At first glance, this is a fair statement. The device looks elegant, which sets it apart from Magic Leap and Google Glass. The developers also highlight some of Orion’s key advantages:
- the device has seven small built-in cameras that display holograms;
- the cameras track eye movements, allowing you to control the image without gestures or words;
- the unique design does not restrict interaction with the environment, as is the case with VR devices;
- have low power consumption and are protected from overheating;
- the goggles do not cover the user’s eyes, and they can communicate freely with other people;
- it is suitable for both interior and exterior use.
The glasses have a built-in artificial intelligence developed by Meta. This AI transforms reality and acts as a personal assistant. For example, the AI can suggest interior design ideas based on a visual analysis of the room. The glasses also sync with mobile applications and messengers. You can use them to make video calls or chat on WhatsApp, watch YouTube videos, browse Pinterest, and play music from Spotify.
An external wireless element complements the model. It processes information and transmits applications to the device. This solution made it possible to design a lightweight accessory. The kit also includes a wristband that allows the device to be controlled using gestures.
According to Meta, the Orion glasses’ official presentation and launch will take place in the near future. However, according to the information leaked after the leak, the device’s launch is planned for 2027.
The company considers the project one of its priority areas. The prototype authors hope that Orion has every chance of becoming the market leader. Given the glasses’ lightness and compactness, these expectations are justified. However, it is difficult to talk about success while the device is still being tested.
