What the MEB+ platform for electric cars will be
Volkswagen has shared its developments in the direction of electric transport. Thus, in the near future, a new platform for electric cars will appear, which will enable them to cover distances of 700 kilometers without recharging. The current model was designed for 500 km.
Initially, the platform MEB+ was to become an updated version of the existing design from the German automobile manufacturer. However, in the course of the work, the specialists decided to go further – and as a result, they promise to present a variant of the new generation, with significantly improved characteristics. In addition to the fact that the MEB+ provides autonomous operation of transport at a distance of 700 km, the platform has an accelerated charging capacity of 175-200 kW. In addition, autonomous driving capabilities have been expanded and an improved version of the technology for battery operation is used.
According to Volkswagen representatives, the platform has an advanced digital infrastructure, as well as improved charge storage functions, and optimized charge utilization.
For now, the platform is promised to be equipped with ten new electric car models that are being prepared for release by 2026. Among them – also a variant costing 25 thousand euros, the other models will belong to the premium-class segment, where price tags start with higher numbers. Experts also predict that by this time it will be possible to see models of electric cars with the MEB+ platform from the Audi brand.
The intensified development of the new base may be a signal that Volkswagen is gradually preparing to switch completely to electric vehicles. At the moment, most of the company’s electric models are based on internal combustion engine vehicles, which, in turn, hinders progress in the electric vehicle division. In addition, current platforms are not always suitable for the installation of electric modules. Therefore, the manufacturer decided to create a new generation platform that is designed specifically for electric cars. It is ideally suited for the mass production of products.
In the basic version, cars on the current platform are equipped with 48 kWh and 62 kWh batteries. In the new MEB+ generation, 82 kWh is promised. The MEB+ will allow for an even weight distribution between the axles, as well as a four-wheel drive variant, for which the design will have an additional electric motor.
An interesting solution from Volkswagen is the backup inductive charging system, through which the batteries of the electric car can act as energy sources, giving charge to the external network. This is useful for owners of private homes. In the event of a power shortage, the car can turn into a kind of power plant.
